Just
akin to any other subject under the sun, music also has its
own unique set of terminology. For most people the many terms
that are frequently used by the musicians in order to describe
music can seem to be very daunting. Yet again, in actuality
there really is nothing mysterious about these high sounding
musical terms. These musical terms are merely words that are
used to describe the music that anybody can hear and understand,
but of course just with a little bit of practice.
Most of the famous works of music and also the composers of
this music are usually referred to with a description of belonging
to a very particular and specific era. Bach was a famous composer
who wrote music in the "Baroque" era. On the other
hand, Chopin was another famous composer of the "Romantic"
era.
These terms that refer to the eras of the music and the composers
merely serve as some kind of shorthand that reveals to us aspects
of style that one piece of music shares with other pieces, which
were written at roughly the same period of time.
The various eras of music relate to much more than just the
sounds of the musical pieces. These eras reflect the broad changes
that are prevalent in a particular society and culture. These
musical eras also reflect that influences that the culture had
on the way the music was written, performed, and heard at any
given period of time.
The various eras that have been identified in the history of
music are: Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic,
and 20th Century. Each of these eras explores the historical
themes, the musical context, and the stylistic ideas that have
marked the six major periods of music.
